Managing Director of MSRA Visited USTC
A delegation from Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) including its Managing Director, Dr. HONG Xiaowen, Senior Researcher of its Network Multimedia Group, Dr. WU Feng, and Mr. LI Bei from its University Relation Dept. took a two-day visit to USTC during Sept. 29th to Sept. 30th.
The delegation called on President HOU Jianguo in the afternoon on Sept. 29th. Director HONG and President HOU held a deep discussion on the cooperation and development plan of research, education and young teacher training, etc. Both parties expressed the will to continue the win-win cooperation and co-cultivation of brilliant talents.

In the evening, the delegation attended an academic report conference which was hosted by Prof. YU Nenghai in the west campus. On the conference, Dr. WU briefly reviewed the history of the cooperation of the two sides and introduced the current construction status of Ministry of Education-Microsoft Key Laboratory. Then, the Director Appointment Ceremony of Key Laboratory and Experimental Zone of Creative Talents was held, on which Prof. LI Weiping, Dean of School of Information Science and Technology, was appointed as the new Director, and Prof. WEI Guo was granted Chair Senior Advisor. Director HONG issued the letters of appointment to Prof. LI and Prof. WEI on the spot.

Later, Director HONG gave a remarkable academic report entitled “The Future of Multimedia, Multimodal Interaction and Multi-Disciplinary Innovation”. He displayed the latest research achievements that MSRA had gained in new-generation user interface, Internet search and multimedia graphics and images field, which is brand new and highly impressive to the students and therefore won their warm applause. Director HONG encouraged the students to pursue their dreams bravely and persistently. His sincere wish and enlightening speech benefited everyone present greatly.

The delegation visited the School for the Gifted Young on Sept. 30th and held a discussion with Dean CHEN Yang and some of the student representatives.
