Professor Joern Ostermann Visits USTC
At the invitation of Prof. LI Weiping, Dean of the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST), Prof. Joern Ostermann from University of Hannover paid a two-day-visit to USTC on Sept. 20th and Sept. 21st.
In the morning of Sept. 20th, Vice President CHEN Chusheng and Prof. LI Weiping held a meeting with Prof. Ostermann to welcome his visit to USTC and hope his visit will bring fruitful collaboration between USTC and University of Hannover. After the meeting, Prof. Ostermann visited the Museum of USTC History and toured the East Campus.
In the afternoon, Prof. Ostermann gave a wonderful presentation on Video Processing in West Campus. The presentation fascinated a roomful of audiences and brought round after round of warm applause.
In the evening, Prof. Ostermann was invited to attend the series activity “Face to Face with Masters” in East Campus. He introduced features of Germany education system as well as his own experiences in doing research all these years. He also carried out interactive dialogues with students through interview and Q&A. The whole activity ended in a friendly and harmonious atmosphere.
In the morning of Sept. 21st, Prof. Ostermann attended a discussion meeting held with SIST faculty. Through the discussion, Prof. Ostermann obtained a clearer image about USTC and SIST, and the faculty also gained a better understanding on the school system and teaching methods at University of Hannover. The two sides proposed collaboration on student exchange program.
In the afternoon, Prof. Ostermann visited the USTC-MSRA Multimedia Communication Laboratory. The two sides shared an interesting afternoon on discussion about potential cooperation on Computer Vision, 2D/3D Video Coding and Video Streaming. Prof. Ostermann also gave the students some advices in doing research as well as some comments and suggestions in their current projects.
Prof. Joern Ostermann is Full Professor and Head of the School of Information Science at the University of Hannover, Germany, since 2003. He is also currently Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Since 2008, Prof. Ostermann is the Chair of the Requirements Subgroup of MPEG (ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29 WG11) as well as a Fellow of the IEEE. He published more than 100 research papers and book chapters and he is holding more than 30 patents.
