Asian American Engineer of 2013 from USTC
The 12th Asian American Engineer of the Year (AAEOY) Award ceremony was held on March 2, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Dallas, US. Dr. GAO Dayong, a distinguished USTC Alumnus, won this annual honor which was issued to commend his original and distinguished contributions to cryobiology, bio-preservation engineering, and the science and technology of artificial organs. Among the 19 Asian scientists and engineers from across the America who won this award, there are only two winners graduated from Chinese Mainland. US President Barack Obama, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu as well as many other US government officials had sent messages to congratulate the winners, praising their courage to explore and hard efforts to realize dreams, and speaking highly of the outstanding contribution made by the Asian American engineers and scientists of the world's scientific and technological progress.
Dr. GAO Dayong is professor of Mechanical Engineering and Adjunct professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. Prior to joining UW, he was professor and Baxter Healthcare Corporation Chair of Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Kentucky (1998-2004). He is also a “Master Chair II Professor” of USTC since 2010. Dr. GAO graduated with B. Sc. (1982) from USTC, and Ph. D (1991) in Mechanical Engineering from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. Dr. GAO has published 175 full research papers in prestigious journals, and over 250 papers/abstracts in conference proceedings. He has obtained 16 patents, authored 2 scientific books and numerous chapters in 17 books. He received numerous awards and research grants from US governments funding agencies, non-profit foundations, and scientific societies/associations, including NIH, DoD, NSF, US Department of Agriculture, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Whitaker Foundation, Washington Research Foundation, Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation, Showalter Foundation, and industries.
The AAEOY Award is a National Engineers Week Program to recognize the outstanding Asian-American professionals for their leadership, technical achievements and remarkable public services in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Many world famous Asian scientists and engineers, including 7 Nobel Prize winners and one Fields Mathematics Prize winner, have also received an “Outstanding Technology Award” or a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from AAEOY.The 2013 AAEOY events are supported by industry leaders, national laboratories, technical communities, academia, government agencies and prominent US companies. Some 600 distinguished guests, corporate executives and community leaders attended the 2013 AAEOY Award Ceremony. Another distinguished alumnus of USTC, Microsoft’s global vice president, Dr. ZHANG Yaqin, had also won the same award in 2006.
