USTC Graduate Winning ICME Best Student Paper Award
On IEEE ICME (International Conference on Multimedia&Expo) 2013 held in San Jose, July 19, USTC graduate student XU Zheng from School of Information Science and Technology received Best Student Paper Award due to his paper entitled “Mining Visualness”. XU is currently under the supervision of USTC Master Professor CHEN Changwen, while the co-author of this paper is Dr. WANG Xinjing, who was also his supervisor during his internship at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA). The paper discussed the topic of how to quantify the visibility of a keyword, i.e. to what extend can the meaning of a given keyword be fully expressed via images. The paper is highly appraised by the reviewers for its originality, technical contributions, and writing.
IEEE ICME, which is annually held in July and co-organized by IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, IEEE Communications Society, and IEEE Computer Society, is a leading conference in multimedia field. The Conference covers every research area in multimedia field such as multimedia information processing, multimedia coding and transmission, multimedia networking, and multimedia vision, etc. The review mode of the Conference is double blind review. The ICME 2013 issued four awards (Best Paper, Best Student Paper, Best Poster, and Best Demo) to four papers out of over one thousand contributions, among which XU’s paper won the only Best Student Paper Award.
