PhD Candidate CHEN Dong Wins 2013 “MSRA Fellowship”
The list of 2013 “Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) Fellowship” winners was unveiled on November 1. After a strict selection by the jury, a PhD candidate called CHEN Dong, who is under the joint supervision by Prof. LI Bin from School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) and Dr. SUN Jian from MSRA, received the prize together with the other nine winners from Microsoft Senior Vice President, Dr. Peter Lee and MSRA Director, Dr. HONG Xiaowen, on the occasion of “Computing in the 21st Century” Conference. The winners will also receive a 10,000-dollar scholarship provided by MSRA so as to promote the research development in computer area.
CHEN Dong entered SIST in September 2006 and acquired the BachelorDegree in Engineering in June 2010. Later in the same year, he became a USTC-MSRA jointly-trained postgraduate in Department of Electronic Science and Technology, and then turned into a PhD candidate in 2012. CHEN was doing an in-depth study on computer vision, especially face recognition area. His research findings had been published by several top conferences on computer vision area including IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) and European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV). The face recognition algorithm proposed by CHEN has now been applied to the Kinect in Microsoft’s next-generation game console – XBOX.
The winning of CHEN Dong is understood to have made USTC the only institute in Chinese Mainland that has been winning the prize for 15 years successively since the scholarship was established.
