Hefei Overview

Hefei, capital city of Anhui province, is located between the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River, and beside the Chaohu Lake. It is a mid-China city nearest to the coastal cities in eastern China.Under its jurisdiction, there are 3 counties namely Feidong, Feixi and Changfeng, and 4 districts namely Yaohai, Luyang, Shushan and Baohe. It occupies an area of 7,047 square kilometers, of which the built-up urban area is 280 square kilometers. With a total population of 5.01 million, the permanent urban residents add up to 2.70 million. 


Hefei is located in the transit zone between subtropics and warm temperate zone with a subtropics moist monsoon climate. The annual precipitation is about 1,000 millimeters, the average temperature 15.7 centigrade and the relative moisture 76%. The air quality reaches the class “good”or higher for over 261 days a year, which is in line with the state environment protection standard Grade 2. 

 

As one of the major cities in China opening up to the outside world, Hefei is listed among Top 100 Cities in terms of comprehensive strength, the 50 Cities with Excellent Investment Environment and Top 30 Cities with Overall & Growth Competition Strength. In 2008, its GDP has increased by 17.2%, 8.2 percentage and 4.5 percentage higher than the whole country and Anhui province respectively. Hefei has established sister city relationship with 12 cities in USA, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Australia, UK, Germany,and Chile etc. and trade ties with over 180 countries and regions. 51 companies among Fortune 500 and other internationally-known big names such as Metro, Johnson, Hitachi, Sanyo, Mitsubishi, Unilever,ABB, Coca-cola, Bouygues, Carrefour,Grand Tour, Chaitai, the President, Continetal, Sumitomo Chemical, Air Liquide, as well as some most famous Chinese companies including Haier, Media, Changhong, Gree , Yili and BOE etc. have made investment in Hefei. The number of outside investors ranks the first in Anhui province.


Located in mid-east of China, Hefei is the very center to a circle with a radius of 500 km, which covers 7 provinces and 1 metropolis with an area of 1.0234 million square km and a population of 500 million. The circle enjoys a well-developed economy with a GDP adding up to 47% of the whole country in 2008. Abundant of human resources, the business costs are comparatively low.


Hefei is a comprehensive transportation hub in China classified as Class 2. With a Class A airport, there are over 30 lines linking the City with Hong Kong , Taibei and other major cities in China and an international airline from Hefei to Seoul. A 4E-level airport named as Xinqiao Int'l Airport is now under construction. From now to 2020, the amount of cargo volume and the number of passengers conveyed through highway in Hefei will respectively reach 122.4 thousand tons and 11 million. Hefei boasts of convenient transportation facilities such as the national highway No. 312 and No. 206, the provincial highways, as well as the expressways of Hefei-Nanjing, Hefei-Wuhu, Hefei-Anqing, Hefei-Xuzhou, Hefei-Tongling-Huangshan and Hefei-Huainan-Fuyang extending in all directions, which make Hefei a transportation center of Anhui Province and even in whole China. In the updated Chinese Railway Networks Program, Hefei is playing a key role of linking the east to the west and the south to the north in the national planning for the important railway junction terminals. There are seven important trunk railways running through Hefei, such as, Beijing-Fujian, Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Kowloon in Hong Kong, Beijing-Guangzhou, Shanghai-Chongqing via Wuhan, Nanjing-Xi’an. This will make Hefei a national railway transportation center and will achieve the goal of one hour traveling to Nanjing, two hours to Wuhan, three hours to Shanghai and Beijing, which will make people enjoy a rapid and convenient trip from or to Hefei. Hefei is expected to be developed into a waterway transportation center linking the Yangtze River System and Huaihe River System, since the neighboring Chaohu Lake leads to the Yangtze River and the Yangtze-Huaihe canal is to be constructed. Hefei Customs has implemented regional customs clearance with customs in the Yangtze River Delta Region.


Hefei is a booming comprehensive industrial city, a "Region for undertaking processing trade transfer", a "National Export Base of Auto & Spare Parts", a "National Development Base of Animation Industry" and a "Base for Service Outsourcing". It has 34 industries covering 200 plus varieties and over 2,000 categories of products, especially with a strong strength in manufacturing. 8 key industries have taken shape, i.e., automobile, equipment manufacturing, household appliances, chemicals & tire, electronic information & software, new materials, bio-technology & new medicine, deep processing of food & agricultural products and side-products. Therefore, a great number of products produced here enjoy a high prestige in market such as JAC auto, Meiling household appliances, Royal Star washing machine, Haier household appliances, Hitachi excavator, Grand Tour tire and Heli forklift etc. In 2008, the proportion of industrial output value realized by the 8 key industries takes up 69.0% of all the enterprises above the designated size in the City.


As an important base for science and education in China, Hefei is the first and sole Science and Technology Innovation Pilot City in China, and a member city of WTA (World Technopolis Association). It boasts of 200 plus research institutes at national- or provincial-level including Hefei Institutes of Physical Science under Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 358 institutes for technological research and development. Hefei homes 59 high-learning institutions including University of Science and Technology of China, which can offer 138 doctoral programs. It is also the home of 31 academicians and nearly 300,000 technicians and professionals.There are 501 hi-tech companies, of which 15 are national key hi-tech companies. After 10-15 years of development, Hefei Demonstration Zone for Science & Technology Innovation Pilot City under construction will grow into an important international and first-class center for knowledge and technology innovation, a place where high quality talents gather and a base for hi-tech industrial development.


Hefei is abundant in human resources. There are more than 220,000 skilled technical workers, including 4,129 technicians with medium or high professional title. College students amount to 480,000, including 10,100 postgraduates studying for master or Ph. D. degree in universities or research institutes such as Hefei branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences. It ranks forefront among similar cities in China in terms of the percentage of professionals and college students among the citizens. 


Hefei has sufficient supply of water, power, heat and gas.Water supply: 1.17 million cubic meters/day.Power consumption in 2008: 9.432 billion Kwh with a maxim load of 1.889 million Kw.  There are one 500KV and eleven 220KV transformer substations. Heat supply: 1,320 tons/hour.And the network of gas supply has covered all the built-up urban area, which can satisfy the consumers' demand. 


Hefei is one of the Chinese cities most suitable for living. It has won various honours such as Advanced City for Afforestation, Garden City, Clean City, Excellent Tourist City, and Excellent City for Comprehensive Environment Management. The percentage of greenery coverage is 43.93%, while per capita public green area adds up to 11.44 square meters. In 2004, it was awarded "China Excellent Living Environment Prize". Since 2005, it won "Chang'an Award" for twice??an award granted to the cities with excellent public security. In 2006, it won such titles as "Chinese City worthy of investment and with greatest potential for investment appraised by multi-national companies", "The Best Business City in the Mainland of China",  "Best City to Invest for Zhejiang Investors", etc. In 2007, it was listed among "Top 10 Cities with Lowest Business Cost" and was appraised as "Best Service City" by investors from Zhejiang province. In 2008, Hefei ranked the 12th among the world's 20 cities in terms of fastest growing economy in the past five years.


In the year of 2008, the whole city realized 166.484 billion RMB in GDP. The fiscal revenue was 30.121 billion, increased by 40%, of which local revenue was 16.094 billion with an increase of 57.8%, the import and export volume totaled 7.708 billion dollars, increased by 23.4%,of which export volume was 5.43 billion dollars with an increase of 26.3%.
